A Week in the Life of a Facilities Manager

Facilities Management is an integral role to the successful running of any Building. At Star Building Management Services, our facilities managers undertake a wide variety of tasks with the ultimate goal of securing your asset’s value.

The Star BMS team bring decades of experience as a building and facilities managers. They have an extensive knowledge of Body Corporate communities and bring expert knowledge on reporting, budgets and compliance matters.

When talking about a job role you usually talk about ‘a day in the life’. The role of a Facilities Manager is very different, each day is unpredictable due to the complexities of a Building. So instead of looking at what a day looks like, let’s take a look at what a week may look like.

A day for a Facilities Manager usually starts by checking their emails to see if there are any urgent tasks required by the buildings they manage.

Site inspections are an integral part of the weekly tasks for a Facilities Manager. This includes inspecting and analysing the building fabric, structures, plant and equipment.

Another task that is usually completed daily is obtaining competitive quotes. At Star BMS we understand that the maintenance of a building can sometimes be costly and therefore strive to achieve the best value for money for our clients, without sacrificing quality. This also includes negotiating ongoing maintenance contracts on behalf of our clients.

A Facilities Manager also frequently visits the schemes they manage to supervise and coordinate service contractors and maintenance activities. This also includes overseeing works on site to ensure that work is carried out to the highest standard. They will also ensure that all contractors on site hold the appropriate licenses and insurances.

Another important area of facilities management is assisting in the preparation of repair and maintenance budgets.

Some other tasks that may be completed throughout the week are liaising with key stake holders, owners & tenants, programming of the buildings access control and building management systems, reviewing and approving invoices, filing of Building documents and attending internal and external meetings.
